5 Reasons Why You Should Travel Alone
Traveling to an unfamiliar place can definitely seem like a scary idea…especially alone. You start thinking of all these scenarios that could happen while you’re out there. Oh…I’ll get there and have no one to enjoy my trip with. It won’t be as fun as traveling with a friend. I won’t have anyone to talk to and I’ll feel extremely isolated/lonely. What if I get lost and can’t find my way back? Even worse…What if I get kidnapped?! I’m here to tell you that it’s all going to be okay. Traveling alone is not as scary as it seems, there are countless reasons why you should travel alone…and when you do, you’re going to have a f*cking blast!
Here are my top 5 reasons why you should travel alone:
1- You’re in total control
You are the captain of this ship…you do what you want, when you want, and don’t have to rely on anyone else. When you travel with others, you always have to take into consideration what they want to do as well. Your schedules might collide and you might not be able to do the things you truly want. But, when you’re alone you have total control over how you spend your time. You want to relax by the beach and read your book all day? Do it. You want to get completely wasted on a pub-crawl? Do it. You want to stay in your hotel and order in room service all day? Do it. No one is stopping you.
2 – You can be your true authentic self
I’m not saying that you aren’t already. But, when you’re outside your comfort zone and in a foreign area, something inside you changes. In our day-to-day lives, we tend to sugarcoat what we say and we’re somewhat cautious of our actions based on our fear of the judgment of others. When you’re traveling alone, it’s like you have a clean slate – no one knows you and this is a great opportunity to express yourself any way you desire without worrying what others think.
3 – To meet others in the same boat as you
One of the biggest misconceptions of traveling solo is that you’ll be completely alone and won’t meet others. The reality is that there are so many travelers (solo or not) out there doing the same thing as you. It’s almost hard not to meet others while traveling alone. You create a very special bond with the people you befriend traveling and these are the people that you’re probably going to keep in contact with (don’t be surprised if your paths cross again in the future!).
4 – It builds confidence
You’ve broken the wall that most people put up when it comes to traveling. Basically…you’re no bitch. Traveling solo is something that most people are too scared to do; but once you’re out there, the world is your oyster and you become much more confident when it comes to talking to strangers, making new friends, taking control of your how you spend your days, trying new things (food, activities, etc.), or even finding ways to communicate with others who don’t speak your language. Confidence is a special trait that solo travelers need to take the trip in the first place…and it only grows from there.
5 – It’s freeing
Traveling alone is one most freeing and liberating things you can do. You get to escape the comfort zone that you’ve created for yourself and experience the world the way you want. It gives you a high on life that you’ve never experienced before; but be careful…it’s addicting 😉
